On Saturday, June 11, Bike New York teamed up with Citi, Bloomberg, the YMCA of Greater New York, and the Mets for the Citi Global Community Day Kick-Off Event, where we helped build and distribute 500 bikes to kids from our After-School Programs as well as kids from YMCA programs all over the city. Last week we teamed up with employees of Bloomberg and the New York Mets at Citi Field to build 1,000 bikes, setting a Northeast record! A few days later at two YMCA locations—the Flushing YMCA and the Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA—we started giving the bikes out to children in our bike education program, and the remainder will be distributed this Saturday. While the smiles on the faces of the volunteers putting the bikes together were certainly impressive, there’s nothing quite like “new bike smile”—especially when there are hundreds of them.
